There are various types of cooperative societies in Papua New Guinea, including agricultural, savings and credit, marketing, and housing cooperatives.
The Co-operative Societies of PNG was established by the Government of Papua New Guinea in 2000 to revitalize and facilitate the development of co-operative societies in the country. We are lead agency that provides funds to co-operatives, coordinating trainings, opening up market access, administering the Co-operative Societies Act and registering co-operatives.
The Co-operative Societies Unit is headed by the Registrar of Co-operative Societies who reports to the Minister for Trade, Commerce & Industry. They are supported by this Minister for administrative matters.
